LEGISLATIVE COMMISSION TO STUDY PAY EQUITY FOR WOMEN STATE EMPLOYEES
Ask your legislators to strongly support a legislative commission to study
pay equity for women in state government and to make recommendations for removing
inequities.
Background: provision for a study of pay equity for women in state government
was included in the legislative studies bill, which did not pass in the last session.
We want to see the commission included in the 2004 studies bill, which will be
considered at the very end of the short session.
Talking points:
- A 2002 report from the Justice Center showed that of the 24% of state employees
in the lowest wage grades, 73% were women. Minority women fared even worse than
white women.
- Two previous studies within the Office of State Personnel showed that women
were not paid equitably with men, yet nothing was done to remedy the disparities.
A commission made up of legislators and others outside state government agencies
is needed to design and monitor a study and work for remedies for inequities.
