Other discussions

The group shared updates on this fall's Women's Agenda Assemblies. A concern was expressed that the process described in the Agenda Building Book is too complicated. Several assemblies have or are planning to vote on the individual topics (as the voting has been done in the past) rather than on the four broad areas (as recommended in this year's ABB). Wake County is planning to offer simultaneous translation into Spanish. The program committee report on the Agenda Assemblies will be posted at www.ncwu.org/2004/AgendaAssemblies.

Women's Advocacy Day will be in March and the first planning meeting is scheduled for Nov. 18.

Paige Johnson and Melissa Reed gave an update on the Emergency Contraception in the Emergency Room project. A survey went out with a cover letter on NCWU letterhead to 117 hospitals across the state. Results will be posted at www.ncwu.org/2004/ecer/.

Anne Mackie recommended exploration of inviting Beverly Daniel Tatum, president of Spelman College and author of Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria, as a speaker at a future NCWU event.

Christina Abbott, APPCNC, announced that the 2003 Adolescent Pregnancy statistics have been released. See http://www.appcnc.org/images/stats2003.pdf. Adolescent Health Advocacy Day will be March 16 in Raleigh. APPCNC will be opening a satellite office, and Christina, who has been NCWU's gracious host at the APPCNC office in Chapel Hill will be transferring there.

Beth Froehling, NCCADV, announced the release of the 2002 Violence Policy Study showing NC ranked 9th in homicides committed by men against women.

The group agreed to combine the November and December meetings and meet on Monday, December 6 at APPCNC. [Note that an APPCNC standing meeting starts at 1:30 on the first Monday, so we will need to adjourn promptly.]

Submitted by Nancy Shoemaker, Secretary.
