Discussion of 2004 elections
Sharon Worthington discussed the results of the elections for women candidates at the state level.
Paige Johnson discussed polling information provided to Planned Parenthood that showed differences in how people ranked a series of issues (Jobs and economic issues, homeland security and terrorism, etc.) based on how they voted. She said 61% of women said not there was not enough discussion of women's issues, validating our mission.
Beth Messersmith gave a rundown on voting irregularities and commented "boards of elections need more resources." She also distributed the Democracy North Carolina 2005 Legislative Agenda.
Updates
The program committee distributed an update on Women's Advocacy Day. The tentative date is March 30, 2005. Next planning meeting is December 17, 1-3, NC Conservation Network, 112 Blount St., Raleigh. A list of committees has been established.
Anne Mackie reported on the Wake County Women's Agenda Assembly
Veronica Butcher reported that the Durham County Women's Agenda Assembly will be in March.
Natalie Fixmer distributed the preliminary results of the Emergency Contraception in the Emergency Room survey that went out earlier this year under the NC Women United logo.
Beth Froehling distibuted the NC CADV legislative agenda.
Gailya Paliga distributed the signup sheet to participate in the NC NOW signature ad in support of Roe v. Wade.
June Kimmel raised the issue that the NC Council for Women has lost staff to the point where there is no one in the central office to handle any advocacy and there is no action to hire someone to take over, for example, the work performed by the previous executive director. This may be an issue of concern to NCWU since the Council can be a voice for women within state government.
Next meeting: January 24, 2005.
