BIG DAY IN STATE LEGISLATURE FOR CAMPAIGN FINANCE REFORM... COME AND SEE!!
Campaign costs in NC have skyrocketed in recent years, and real state-level campaign finance reform is needed more now than ever. The Judicial Campaign Reform Act (S 1054), which is a first step towards real reform, will be up for debate in committee on Wednesday, July 17!

The Judicial Campaign Reform Bill (S-1054) will be heard in the House Elections Law Committee
11 am on Wednesday, July 17,
in Room 1328 (same as room 1227)
in the Legislative Building on Jones Street, Raleigh.
This is the bill that establishes the first full public financing program
for general election candidates. It just covers candidates in races for
state Supreme Court and Court of Appeals, but it sets the precedent by
creating a Fair Elections Fund, largely funded with a "reverse" check-off on
income tax forms.
The Judicial reform bill also makes those appellate-level elections
nonpartisan (same as the lower courts now) and provides a Voter Guide on
these appellate candidates to all households.
The committee may even vote on the bill on Wednesday, but it's hard to know
this far in advance...  Anything can happen, so you can check the
legislative calendar on the General Assembly's website on Wednesday morning
to be sure the bill (S-1054) is still scheduled: <http://www.ncleg.net>  or
<http://www.ncga.state.nc.us/Calendars/CurrentCalendars/CurrentHouseCalendar.pdf>
If the vote is taken, it promises to be close... We need a FULL ROOM to let
the legislators know we care about changing the campaign finance system...
Come as you are.... with a friend...
If you can't come click here to send a message to Speaker Jim Black to say that you care about campaign finance reform: <http://www.democracysouth.org/actnow/> or call your legislator.  If you call
and the Legislator is not available, please leave a detailed message with their Legislative Assistant. Be prepared to give them your name and address and phone number, if they ask. Be clear, concise, and respectful, but make your points.
