We need your support for H544, "State Employee Pay Equity," introduced by Representative Martha Alexander. The bill asks for a study commission to investigate disparities in pay between men and women and between minorities and non-minorities. At present of the 24% of state employees in the lowest pay grades, 73% are women.

This is a priority of NC Women United. The State Employees Association's policy committee is also supporting it. A companion bill is to be introduced in the Senate by Senator Jeannie Lucas.

Next Wednesday, April 2, H544 is scheduled to come before the State Government Committee at 11:00. You can help by calling or sending an e-mail to members of the committee--or at least some of them--especially anyone you know, and especially Bernard Allen and Joni Bowie. Ask them to support the bill. (You don't have to say a lot, because this is only a study bill.) If you should want to attend the committee meeting, by all means come. Arlene McKay and I will be there.

Committee members are: Rep. Larry Womble, 733-5777, Larryw@ncleg.net
