Surprise Passage of Restrictive Measures Will Limit NC Women’s Full Access to Reproductive Health Care – Public Statement

Access to comprehensive health care, including the full range of reproductive health care options, is crucial to North Carolina women’s health and well-being, safety, economic security and ability to fully participate in society. Yet with no public notice, the North Carolina State Senate pulled a fast one with the passage of HB 695–a restrictive measure that will only limit this access for women across the Tar Heel state. During this busy legislative session, women from around the state have testified at legislative hearings and contacted their elected representatives regarding their support for the full spectrum of reproductive health care options. On issues that are so personal and so crucial to women’s health, legislators must pursue honest, open discussions about what any of this type of legislation may mean for women in North Carolina. This means full public notice, not a surprise attack on a summer evening right before a holiday. Women in this state deserve better.
